Summary

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is the successor to The Dufferin-Peel Roman Catholic Separate School Board, which was established in 1969 by the merger of eight small separate boards. The board’s jurisdiction extends throughout the municipalities of Mississauga, Brampton, Bolton, Caledon, Orangeville and Dufferin County. Dufferin-Peel is one of the largest and fastest growing school boards in Ontario.

Customer Profile Education

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is one of the largest and most diverse school districts in Ontario, with 1,050,926 residents, over 2,670 square kilometers. As of September 2009, the board operates 145 Catholic schools (120 elementary and 25 secondary) throughout Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and Orangeville, with a student enrolment of approximately 86,951 (52,747 elementary and 34,204 secondary students). In addition, over 30,000 students enrol in the board’s Adult and Continuing Education Programs each year.

Business Challenge

The Board identified the need to take steps to improve the safety and security of their facilities, students and staff. This required a solution that would allow them to proactively monitor hallways and grounds for possible intruders and inappropriate student behavior, better respond to emergency situations and provide them with video evidence for post-event investigation. Critical to improving overall safety and security was the implementation of an intelligent, management system for video, access control and alarms. It was of primary importance that the system’s user interface be highly intuitive and user-friendly as many people with minimal security training would be required to use the system. Additionally, the system must be able to have users and clients distributed throughout the schools and buildings so that video could easily be monitored.

Solution

Vision Dynamics was selected as system designer and installation company because of their extensive industry experience and reputation. The DVR of choice was the American Dynamics Intellex with Sony cameras providing high resolution video. To date, 120 DVR’s and 1,920 cameras have been installed via the Board network providing access for over 100 simultaneous users. Video can be viewed and reviewed at each Board location or remotely, centralized control is located at the Plant Department. This has been an 8 year project and currently GUI mapping is being added using Kantech software. The Catholic Education Centre was protected with American Dynamics high speed domes and Panasonic Super D mini domes.
